This post shares news about a new article I co-authored on assistive technology, now available in Closing The Gap Solutions Magazine.
People often ask how I use assistive technology (AT) in my daily life. They want to know what tools I use, how they work together, and how they help me communicate, create content, and use a computer more independently. Now I have something I can share with them.
My article with Tiffany Wilson is live in the April edition of Closing The Gap Solutions Magazine, one of the most respected publications in the assistive technology field.
The article, “Mobility and Speech Disabilities: Digital Solutions in Practice,” explains and compares the tools I use. These include head tracking, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), adaptive mice, and content creation tools. It also walks through my real workflow and shows how these digital solutions support communication and access in everyday life.
Why this article matters
This article is grounded in lived experience. After hospitalizations left me without communication or computer access, I had to build a workflow that worked for me without professional guidance. That process took trial and error, persistence, resilience, and a great deal of problem-solving. It taught me that assistive technology is not only about individual devices or software. It is about finding the right combination of tools to support communication, creativity, independence, and participation.
What the article covers
In the article, I share practical information about the AT I use, including:
• Head tracking
• AAC
• Adaptive mice
• Content creation tools
I also explain how these tools fit into my real workflow. My goal is to help readers better understand what digital access can look like for someone with mobility and speech disabilities.
A real-world look at assistive technology
Too often, conversations about AT stay general. This article takes a practical approach. It shows how digital tools work in real life and why access matters beyond theory.
I hope this piece helps professionals, educators, families, and people with disabilities seeking practical examples of AT in use. I also hope it encourages others who are still building their own systems and learning what works best for them.
