There are some days when walking feels like routine, and then there are days when walking feels like a breakthrough. Tuesday, August 26, was one of those days.
When I am strapped into the Atalante X exoskeleton for my weekly session, I don’t expect anything different. But from the very first steps, I felt a spark—like something inside me had clicked. My stride was steady, my energy was high, and for the first time in a long while, I felt like an athlete training for something big. It was as if my body and mind were perfectly in sync, urging me to keep going.
Walking Without Limits
Usually, walking means pauses—catching my breath, shifting my weight, stopping for just a moment before pushing forward again. But this time, there were no stops. I just kept going. Step after step, I moved with a determination that felt both familiar and new. By the end, my whole body ached, but not in a way that discouraged me. Instead, it was the ache of muscles fully alive, the ache that whispers, You did something amazing today.
Discovering a Voice in Motion
The most unexpected part of the session wasn’t about my legs at all—it was about my voice. As I walked, I realized my speech was clearer, stronger, and more consistent than usual. Somehow, the rhythm of walking in the Atalante X gave my voice more power, more presence. Even my standing wheelchair doesn’t create that kind of change. It was a discovery that left me both surprised and hopeful.
The Power of Support
None of this would have happened without the guidance of my physical therapists. Week after week, they meet me with energy, encouragement, and a belief in my abilities that never wavers. They push me further than I think I can go, but also remind me to celebrate the progress I’ve made. Their role is more than that of a trainer or coach—they’re a partner in this journey, someone who makes each milestone possible.
A Step Toward Tomorrow
Walking on August 26 reminded me why this journey matters. Each stride in the Atalante X is more than exercise; it’s a step toward strength, independence, and possibility. It’s proof that progress doesn’t always arrive with fanfare—it shows up in the quiet moments, in the steady rhythm of feet on the floor, in the discovery of a stronger, clearer voice.
And so, I keep walking. Not just to move forward, but to uncover what each step has to teach me.
