Strap In, Stand Tall: Adventures in Walking Session Comebacks

Yesterday marked a turning point for me—a true win that I just can’t help but share. After several weeks away due to a mix of schedule hiccups and, let’s be honest, life simply getting in the way, I was finally back to my walking sessions. I always know these sessions matter, but it wasn’t until I stood up and took those first tentative steps that I realized just how much I’d missed this part of my routine. Sometimes, it’s the simple act of moving that really makes you appreciate what your body can do, especially after a break.

To start, I alternated between lower and higher resistance, constantly challenging myself to go a bit further, one step at a time. I was actually surprised at how much stamina and energy I still had—if anything, those weeks off made me hungrier to push myself. I racked up more steps than usual, and with every lap, a little bit of my confidence returned. There’s something so satisfying in outdoing your own expectations.

But the real magic happened thanks to my therapist, who noticed something that made a world of difference. He adjusted the straps on my trunk to help me stand more upright. You wouldn’t think it’s a big deal, but it completely changed the experience. Suddenly, my steps felt smoother, my core was more engaged, and—kind of unexpectedly—my breathing became much easier. Even my voice grew stronger, which made for a more confident conversation throughout the session. It’s funny how much posture affects not just your physical movement, but also your breathing and the strength of your voice. Sometimes, the most minor adjustment can flip a switch you didn’t even know was there.

It’s easy to take mobility for granted. Before I became a quadriplegic, I never really thought twice about standing tall or walking without effort. Losing that ease for a time, and then fighting to get it back, has shown me how precious—and hard-earned—these small victories are. I’m incredibly grateful for the support I have around me: my therapist, cheering me on and finding the tweaks that make a difference; friends and family encouraging me to keep going; and my own stubborn streak that refuses to back down. Sometimes, just showing up is half the battle.

So, here’s to more days filled with progress, resilience, and new reasons to celebrate what we’re capable of. It might not always be easy, but every little win adds up—and I plan to keep stacking them, one step at a time.
